Figuring Out Which Vacuum to Buy

When you're comparing vacuum cleaners it's usually safe to assume that you'll be looking at a higher price tag for canister vacuums as opposed to the traditional, bagged vacuums. The cost difference can be justified by the fact that you won't have to waste money in ongoing replacement vacuum bags.

Anytime you buy something that has all the newest bells and whistles on it, you can also expect to pay more. This same principal holds true with vacuum cleaners. The cost of a traditional, upright vacuum can range anywhere from $50 for one of those cheapo pawn shop models, all the way up, past $1,000 for the really fancy ones with the same kind of technology you might find on a NASA space ship!

If you decide to go with one of these cheapo models, you can expect some pretty basic features like all the classic hose attachments, low/high carpet settings for bare floors and carpeting. Most of these cheaper ones run on the old bag technology, but you can sometimes find ones that use canisters instead which are generally more preferred as they require less maintenance.

When you get into the higher end models up upright cleaners, you start getting pretty fancy. You can expect features like sensors that detect dirt, HEPA filter vacuums which surround the vacuum's motor, thus protecting it from all the dirt and dust that fly's past it. Like the nicer push mowers that have self propulsion technology, that too can be found on some of the higher end upright cleaners.

Higher end vacuums are not typically prided on having exponentially more power than the less expensive ones, but they have a ton more bells and whistles that usually makes the process of vacuuming much more enjoyable and efficient.

The highest priced vacuums are always going to be the canister vacuum cleaners which usually rest on their side, with wheels. With much more control over the levels of suction, canister vacuums are particularly good for versatile cleaning jobs because you can go from light suction on delicate items, to full-power on the difficult ones.

Regardless of whether you buy an upright $50 vacuum, or a $1,500 canister vacuum, you'll still want to perform regular vacuum cleaner maintenance to ensure you get the most out of your machine.
