The head on my trusty 7-year old hoover alpina needed replacing as it had worn out after loads of use - the retractable brushes on the underside of the head had long stopped working so the vacuum cleaner wasn't being as effective as it could.

I finally got round to having a look here on amazon as I was fed up of vacuuming like a demon but it being quite hard work as I was having to hoover the same area a few times to make a good job of it.

I tried it out for he first time yesterday. It's brilliant and works a treat. Because it also has a felt-type material on the head which dislodges hair etc from the carpet, I didn't even need to use the retractable brushes. It's robust and is a perfect fit.

The only thing wrong with my vacuum cleaner was that the head needed replacing as the suction is still great, so I'm pleased that I finally got round to buying this replacement head - my vacuum cleaner now works like new.

I wasn't sure whether to buy the head on amazon as there were no reviews, but I'm so glad I did. The total price was very reasonable as delivery was free, and it arrived quickly in about 3 days.

This is a very solidly build vacuum cleaner and whilst no light weight to lift, it glides effortlessly over carpets with minimal work from the operator. The only assembly which is required is to mate the handle with the cleaner body which involves no tools as the one and only accessible securing nut requires only to be hand-tightened.

The detachable electrical cord really is a fine idea. It means that if you have a mishap and cause it damage or perhaps it loses it's flexibility after a few years use, a replacement simply plugs-in like a kettle or PC flex. This also means you are free to choose any length or colour of cord assuming of course it is of sufficient capacity for the appliance. The flex supplied is mid-grey to match the body of the cleaner and is over 30' long! Clearly this cleaner was intended to be suitable for long hallways and large public areas as well as the average home. The easy-access dusting brush is cool as well because it is not stored separately so that it can get lost, it simply slides down the telescopic 'wand' when required and back up out of the way when it is not.

Coming with a five year domestic-use warranty covering both parts and labour, you know that for a comparatively modest outlay you will have a sturdy cleaner for at least the next 260 weeks which works out very economically in my opinion. Probably not a first-choice cleaner for a very small or cluttered house, for which I would recommend a steerable cleaning-head such as that found on the excellent Sebo Felix range.

The dust-bags are quite large and although not, at present, sold by Amazon directly they are available readily from the Electrolux site although several on-line independent retailers sell the original articles more economically. The cleaner is supplied with 1 already fitted plus 5 spares so in my house that should last a good 12 months.

For Mrs Whyte, the reviewer having some difficulties; The brush roller switch has an 'on' position for carpets and and 'off' position for when using the hose, although note that bringing the cleaner to the locked upright-standing position will also switch off the brush roller motor. You also mention a short hose, well the metal tubular hose-end which also provides a dusting brush is telescopic. The flexible hose also comes free of the clip on the cleaner body for extra length. I haven't measured it but it certainly reaches any cobwebs on my ceiling!
